Our History

OsborneESM Technologies® is a third generation family business ran by the Osborne family. Our story begins in 1957 with Grandfather Osborne buying a feed dealership with the money he saved during his service in the Korean War. Over time he built the business into an industry leading egg production company. Part of that company included the processing of liquid egg in “egg-breaking” facilities which is used by food companies to produce many different products like mayonnaise, ice cream, and cakes. One of the major challenges facing egg-breaking facilities is the disposal of the eggshells left over from their process. In the United States alone, more than 2 billion dozen eggs are broken in these plants every year. Before ESM Technologies began working with eggshells, there was not a good solution for their disposal. The only options were to spread it on land as a fertilizer or to dispose of the shells in a dump as waste. Mr. Osborne was a firm believer in making the most of our limited resources which drove him to find a use for the eggshells that his company was producing.

From 1993 to 2003, Mr. Osborne worked to find a solution for what to do with all of those eggshells. In his research, he learned that there was a significant amount of collagen in the membrane found just inside the eggshell. (This membrane is that pesky film that gives you so much trouble when you try to peel a hardboiled egg!) Collagen is the main structural protein of the various connective tissues in the human body. As the main component of connective tissue, it is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up from 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. Mr. Osborne discovered a wide variety of applications for collagen; one of those as an ingredient in the nutrition industry for joint health products, bone health products, and beauty products. He continued his research looking further into collagen as the primary source of the value in eggshells.

“How do you get the membrane to separate from the rest of the eggshell?” he wondered. This was the biggest hurdle in using eggshell membrane; it likes to stay connected. It took about ten years to solve this problem. Mr. Osborne jokes about how he had 100 workers with tweezers pulling the membrane free from the eggshell. What he and his team really developed was a totally mechanical system that uses heat and vacuum to separate the membrane from the eggshell. This now patented process is ideal in that it does not require any chemicals and the only byproduct of the process is steam. The plant that ESM Technologies currently runs will process around 20,000 – 30,000 lbs. of eggshells per day. That would take a lot of tweezers!

ESM Technologies was then founded in 2003 to sell ingredients to the nutrition industry that are developed from eggshells and the membrane within. From the eggshell membrane, ESM Technologies established NEM® – a supplement ingredient that has been clinically studied and shown to support joint comfort and flexibility much faster than other common joint health ingredients. Along with NEM®, ESM Technologies also established ESC®- one of nature’s purest and most absorbable forms of calcium from eggshells. ESC® naturally combines ultra-pure calcium carbonate with inherent transport proteins for maximum absorption, and essential trace minerals for supporting bone mineral density.

In the ten years that ESM Technologies has been in business, it has become the world leader in eggshell membrane products and now sells its ingredients across the globe.
